  28. I know a few musicians who actually PREFER mastering on VHS HI-FI. It really
  29. does have performance similar to CD, without the digital "harshness" some
  30. complain about. The main thing is, you're not limited to 16 bits per channel
  31. and the problems this can cause with very quiet signals (fewer bits). Here
  32. are the HI-Fi specs for my Panasonic 7650 edit deck:

  34. Frequncy response: 20 Hz to 20 KHz
  35. S/N ratio: Over 90 dB

  37. That's awfully similar to CD. Specs aren't mentioned for frequency rolloff,
  38. but I have seen them elsewhere and the curve is nearly ruler-flat. In a
  39. blindfold test, I defy anyone to pick out HI-FI as sounding worse than CD or
  40. DAT.

  42. Remember, HI-FI heads are mounted on the video drum, so you're recording
  43. audio at the equivalent of a few hundred feet per second. Great for video
  44. production, but there are two reasons why I wouldn't actually use it for,
  45. say, mastering an album:

  47. 1) Everything ends up on CD, so it'll still have to be converted to digital
  48. at some point. Best not to introduce another step into the process, unless
  49. you're going to vinyl (yeah, right).
  50.  
  51. 2) There CAN be very faint, very slight "pops" caused by tape dropouts. The
  52. more dropouts, the worse the problem, so use a really good tape. When I'm
  53. mastering narration or background music, or recording sound in the field, I
  54. don't care. But I wouldn't want that on an album.

  56. On the upside, how else are you going to record four to eight hours of
  57. continuous CD-quality music? Talk about the mother of all makeout tapes!

  60. What does this have to do with LightWave? Well, you can record really great
  61. audio to play under your animations, so dig out those MOD files!
